Types Of Software Computer

Software is an integral part of a computer system as a bridge with hardware so that computers can be used for various needs. A computer, both PC and laptop, has two main components called hardware and software. Hardware is the physical constituent of a computer, such as the mainboard, storage devices (hard disk), temporary memory (RAM), keyboard, mouse, and so on. On the other hand, the hardware will not be able to be used without the presence of software installed or installed in the hardware.

Types of Computer Software

Computer software has three main categories, namely operating systems, language software, and application programs.

Operating system

The operating system is software that is used to control the execution of computer programs. Currently, several operating system products are found. Among those that are quite popular for computers are DOS, Unix, Linux, Windows, and MacOS. When the computer is first turned on, the earliest operating system will run. Certain operating systems require the use of supported hardware. For example, a certain type of processor is required or it must have a certain size of RAM. The operating system is supported by the appropriate hardware, will optimize the use of the computer.

1. Software Language
   This program is an application that is used to translate commands in machine language. That way, commands can be received and understood by the computer. This program converts human-designed architectures and algorithms into a format that computers can run. Examples of programming language software are Basic, Cobol, Pascal, C++, and Fortran.

2. Application program
   Application programs are software that is made with certain capabilities and functions according to needs. Computer application programs are very diverse. For example, for typing in offices, MS Word, Open Office, and so on are available. There is also a number processing application using MS Excel. For people who are in the design world, there are Corel Draw, Photoshop, and so on.
   The following are examples of various types of application programs that are quite popularly used in everyday life:

   • Word processing software: MS Word, Wordpad, Notepad
   • Database software: Oracle, MS Access and so on
   • Spreadsheet software: Apple Numbers, Microsoft Excel
   • Multimedia software: Real Player, Media Player
   • Presentation software: Microsoft Powerpoint, Keynotes
   • Enterprise software: Customer relationship management system
   • Information worker software: Documentation tools, resource management tools
   • Educational software: Encarta and Britannica (dictionaries), MATLAB (mathematics), Google Earth and NASA World Wind (digital maps)
   • Simulation software: Flight and Scientific Simulation
   • Application suites: OpenOffice, Microsoft Office - Software for engineering and product development: IDE or Integrated Development Environments
